How to Work More Effectively

In order to work more effectively, simply follow the AWOL principle:

A is for Ability
The skills necessary to get the job done. Without the skills and ability to get the job done, the project may be delayed unnecessarily. You should also familiarize yourself with the project. This familiarization is what the experience is for. Know how to do the project faster, better, easier.

W is for Work Ethics
The willingness to do the job right. Avoid any risky short cuts that may jeopardize the project success. Be willing to commit the necessary resources and time in order to make the project successful. Unethical deceptions may work in the short run, but in the long run, it is always harmful.

O is for Organization Skills
Prepare ahead of time. Organize the workload in such a way as to minimize interference and idle time while maximizing productivity. Distinguish between urgency and importance. Urgent means immediate. Important means crucial or necessity. Do not spend idle time waiting for that phone call when an answering machine will do just fine.

L is for Listening Skills
By listening, you gather important information with which you base your decisions on. Learn how to read between the lines. Know which information is useful and which ones are irrelevant. It is unwise to make decision based on instinct when logic can be applied. It is irresponsible not to seek necessary information when it can be readily obtained.

By using these AWOL principles, you can be sure to not only double your productivity, but also half the frustation and difficulties in doing your work. Prepare ahead of time so minimal effort is spent in actually doing the work, thereby making the work not only easier, but also faster.
